Description
Nowruz translates to “the new day” in farsi which reflects the importance of this celebration to many people in Afghan culture. It marks the beginning of Spring, symbolising the concept of rebirth and new beginnings in both life and nature. For my family the celebrations last around 2 weeks and are focused on spending time with loved ones. There is a joyous mood throughout this time where often children sing songs and special foods are prepared. “Haft mewa” is one such popular food, this translates to seven fruits which is what the dish consists of. It is a compote of these fruits and their juices. These seven ingredients are as follows: red raisins, black raisins, yellow raisins, senjid (the dried fruit of the oleaster tree), pistachio, dried apricot, and dried apple.
